"In the name of the women of South Africa we say to you that we are opposed to the pass system.  We shall not rest until we have won for our children their freedom, justice and security."

With these words Lilian Ngoyi led twenty thousand women in an anti-pass protest to the Union Building. The protest took place on 9th August 1956, now commemorated by National Women's Day.

While this was one of the most important days in South Africa's struggle against apartheid, it was just one of many in the life of Lilian Ngoyi.  Her active role in the fight for equality and justice took Ma Ngoyi all over the world and to the remotest parts of South Africa. It earned her many months in jail and long years of bannings. South Africa's struggle for freedom could not have been won without the contribution of its women. And Lilian Ngoyi stands head and shoulder above them all.
